BambooDoc is an audiovisual production company based in Strasbourg, but its heart beats somewhere between France, Brazil and Costa Rica. It doesn’t stand still…
Created in 2017 by Sarah and Luis Miranda, BambooDoc’s goal is to produce for the international market documentary films that are ambitious from an editorial and artistic point of view.
Films aimed at a large audience and which dialogue with the issues of today’s world: the environment, social sciences, geopolitics and history.
Producer / author
Sarah is the manager and a producer at BambooDoc. With a Master of Science in Anthropology and a master’s degree in Human Rights from the University of London, she is the co-author of a dozen of documentary films co-produced notably by France Télévisions and ARTE.
Since 2017, she has produced for BambooDoc the historical film “Vous n’aurez pas l’Alsace et la Lorraine” (52min), as well as the discovery/nature series “Costa Rica: the rise of nature” (3x43min + 3x52min). Currently, she is developing with several author-directors new documentary films on history, nature and cultural heritage.
Director
Luis has been directing films since 1993. His first documentary, “My Images of Sarajevo”, was screened by ARTE in 1994. Since then, he is the director of more than twenty documentary films broadcasted by France Télévisions, ARTE, Canal +, RAI, TV Cultura Brasil, Histoire, Planète, TV 5 Monde, among others. Co-founder of BambooDoc, Luis develops within the company his next films on themes related to environmental issues, archaeology and geopolitics.

Sofia holds a Master’s degree in Audiovisual Communication and an Executive Master’s degree in Media Management (Science Po Paris). She worked in the production division of ARTE for about 7 years. For more than 15 years, she has been working for independent film productions, exclusively in the field of documentaries and digital experiments (such as BBC Worldwide France). Her experience in project management has allowed her to intervene in training and project auditing for audiovisual professionals. An independent producer, she has been developing and producing documentaries for BambooDoc since 2018. She is also in charge of the professional days (France) of the FIPADOC.

Up to know, Costa Rica has been focused on the conservation of it’s land surface. But today, the main challenge concerns the country’s maritime area – ten times larger than its land surface and of which only a tiny part is protected. Attracted by Costa Rica’s mild temperatures, thousands of species – humpback whales, hammerhead sharks, sea turtles – come here to mate and give birth. They travel from far across the oceans, from all four corners of the globe; their migration knows no borders. But their route here has become increasingly dangerous. And the maritime national parks are threatened in many different ways. Pollution, warming waters and overfishing are all laying siege to these sanctuaries of the sea.

This is a country that has recovered its majestic nature after centuries of deforestation. Destined to intensive agriculture and livestock farming, its ancient forest was destined to become large-scale farms and grazing pastures for as far as the eye could see. But today, a lavish green woodland once again covers half of Costa Rica, from the Pacific Coast, along the flanks of the volcanoes, to the Caribbean Sea. Although women and men are now watching over this convalescent forest, the true artisans of its restoration are the animals that inhabit it: jaguars, tapirs, white-lipped peccaries, spider monkeys, great green macaws, among others. They shape it; they are its architects and its builders. Without them, the forest would disappear.

The dry forest, which once covered the entire Pacific coast of Central America, now exists only as isolated “vestiges”. In Costa Rica, however, it has been revived and even expanded thanks to the efforts of biologists and the local population. Here, the population of jaguars, a top predator, is increasing. This unique forest – dense, abundant and colorful during the rainy season, camouflaged and asleep during the dry season – is home to a splendid diversity of plants, trees and wildlife. The fauna and flora of this little-known biotope have adapted to the drought that afflicts it six months a year: toads take refuge underground to avoid dehydration; mammals such as spider monkeys patiently endure extreme heat and modify their diet according to the seasons; wasps, as well as certain birds, migrate to the humid forests that surround nearby volcanoes…

“Best of” the series “Costa Rica : the rise of nature”. Blue-chip documentary.
Costa Rica is a unique jewel on our planet. It has not only halted the destruction of its forests, but it has become, in only some thirty years, a true sanctuary for more than 5% of the world’s biodiversity.
A network of national parks unique in the world protects its abundant ecosystems. Dry forests, rainforests, volcanoes, marine parks… Despite countless challenges, the preservation of these natural environments and their fauna is more than ever a priority for this small Central American country.

When the victorious French troops entered Strasbourg in November 1918, they were astonished to discover a city that hardly corresponded to the image conveyed in France by the press, literature and official statements. The long-dreamed Alsace-Lorraine, which for four decades had featured in school classes and in the fiery speeches of politicians, had nonetheless become, from the very beginning of the First World War, one of the “war goals” of the Republic. France mobilized the whole nation for the return of the “lost provinces” and it was one of the main justifications for its involvement in the conflict.
For the German Reich, Reichsland Elsaß-Lothringen was a naturally German region whose cultural roots were an irrefutable proof of its belonging to the German nation. For the International Community, Alsace-Lorraine was an unresolved geopolitical issue. Regularly mentioned by diplomats, sometimes on the headlines of international newspapers, and the subject of passionate debate in political and intellectual circles, Alsace-Lorraine “has disrupted world peace for nearly 50 years”, according to the American President Woodrow Wilson.
For the people of Alsace and Lorraine at last, the Great War marked a social fracture but also the foundation a disputed identity that would shape the regional spirit, with painful repercussions in the decades to come. This film presents an unexpected reading of the First World War, its causes and consequences, through the prism of the “Alsace-Lorraine question”.
